I had the pleasure of working the Blackerby/Holzer Women recently. This session was part of the Real Women, Real Beauty project. The women joined me in my studio for a fun afternoon filled with makeup (by Shasta Hankins), clothes, accessories, and of course my camera. Grandma Karen, Mom Amy, and the Girls- Alysia, Peyton, and Maylea celebrated their inner and outer beauty capturing this amazing time in their lives.
As we were going through the session, I showed Alysia a picture of her I had just captured on the back of my camera (as I often do). When she saw the picture her eyes immediately welled up, “I look so beautiful”, was the comment she made in almost a tone of disbelief. Her reaction pretty much sums up why I began doing the Real Beauty sessions. I am not ashamed to say that when I heard her say that I also teared up a bit. At their Image Premier it was Mom and Daughter and again it was so much fun. I loved hearing Alysia’s reaction yet again, but this time to her Mom’s pictures. She was so proud of her mom and excited to see how beautiful all the images were of her mom. To me that is the other part of why these sessions are important, so that the daughters can also see their moms in a new light. They need to see that as moms we are still worth the time and money to remember ourselves. Life does not end, or stop being documented just because we become mothers.
