When Hillary asked if I’d be willing to take some pictures of Aubrey wearing her hair pieces of course I said yes! No way I was turning down these beautiful Blooms! Each Metallic Bloom is hand made with vintage fabrics, ribbons, and jewelry. They are stitched together and then attached to a clip that can either be worn by itself or attached to a headband. I’ve seen lots of hair pieces and I can honestly say these are some of the prettiest, best made ones I’ve ever seen. Sadly for a lot of professional photographers, myself very much included, our own family photographers of the daily happenings in our lives are left not documented. For myself I found that the more I learned about my camera the less I’ve used it for images of everyday life. I’m constantly thinking about ISO, shutter speeds, light…. and not about capturing these precious moments in my children’s lives. That is why I’ve joined this 10 on 10 group. These images while not technically perfect are capturing my children and our lives.

This month’s images are all about one of our favorite spring time activities… planting our garden. My family never had a garden growing up, but Steve’s grandpa had 3 huge gardens. In fact one garden sat where our house now sits, and was bigger than the area of our house. He grew just about everything you could grown in the Inland Northwest. So, by comparison our seems pretty small to my husband, but to most would seem huge. This is our 3rd year growing it and each year it gets a little bigger and we try something new. This year we’re planting 2 kinds of lettuce (and another a little later), 2 kinds of carrots, peas, green beans, yellow beans, 3 kinds of tomatoes, onions, corn, zucchini, yellow squash, acorn squash, and cucumbers. This year we also planted several fruit trees- apples and peaches. Hopefully in a couple years we’ll add some fruit into our veggies and produce from the grocery store will be a thing of the past, at least for the bulk of the year!

Every good garden starts with a good dose of manure and then rotatilling it all in. Thank goodness for Grandpa’s rotatiller!

Now it is time to plant. First making the rows. Riley is helping with some more rotatilling with his truck. Not everything is planted yet… gotta wait for it to stop freezing overnight, but it is a good start!

After makeup we talked about wardrobe. The Fredericks had brought tons of amazing clothes with them, so it was just a matter of finding what would be the best fit for the type of images we were wanting to capture. Once we had wardrobe and makeup taken care of we started shooting. It is always fun to work with a family with older siblings as they have fun with each other as we shoot. The girls especially LOVED seeing Mom dolled up and in front of the camera.

Plus, I had the fun of being next to Fringe Salon and Boutique, which is located on Spokane’s South Hill on 29th next to Rosauers. I had been in Fringe before, so I knew that they carried lots of gorgeous things, but being next to them and meeting Hillary and Tiffany was super fun (and full of temptation. lol) Stay tuned for more news about how this chance encounter is leading to lots of good things!

When Erika came in for her session she was treated to having her makeup done by Shasta Hankins, a Freelance Makeup artist, adult conversation (because all moms know that alone is worth its weight in gold!), help styling her clothes, and then a portrait session in the studio. Erika admitted that she was a little self-conscience about her weight, but as you can see that was not an issue. She truly embodied the whole reason behind the Real Women, Real Beauty sessions.

Too often as women, especially as I’ve become a Mother, we’re so inundated by media about what society considers beautiful that we forget that they are all too often wrong.    Yes, Jennifer Aniston, Taylor Swift, Zooey Deschanel, Carrie Underwood, Angelina Jolie, …  are all beautiful, but for many that is an unachievable dream.  Does that mean we give up on the idea of beauty, no it means we need to re-define it!

At the Real Women, Real Beauty sessions each women is treated to a professional makeup application by the amazing Shasta Hankins, a Freelance Makeup Artist. It has been a pleasure to work with Shasta and see her bring out the natural beauty within each women she works with! As we move into shooting I love being able to show a couple images on the back of the camera to each person. I love seeing that reaction- the amazement that it is really them, the awe, and even the tears. This is what this is all about… having each women realize the beauty that is within them!
